The Camouflage
The proposal for the public design competition for the "Varandas do Sado" housing complex has its origins in aspects that characterize the existing land, among others that will be mentioned.
I can perhaps point out the most relevant thing, which is the difference in elevations that exist, descending from west to east, as well as being conditioned by the solar orientations that exist and by the manipulation, knowledge and management of the program according to the spaces available now to build or leave vacant.
Also important for the proposal is the close existence of the green park of Bela Vista and the view (over Foz do Sado and the sea), which conditioned the staggered altimetry of the complex, in the search for the best views and exposure, as well as chromatically and spatially sought to absorb the spirit of this neighboring park, in a certain idea of camouflage of the buildings in the park and spatial continuity.
In this context, the solution arrived at, originating from what was described, and adding all the programmatic premises, is developed into five buildings that are unified at their base, through a common floor and which is intended for parking and storage. This underground floor of the garage is simultaneously the platform on which the user or inhabitant can access via the galleries and accesses provided (staircases and ramps) at the ends and corners, and enjoy the outdoor spaces designed in this layout of the building, and which They are three independent but interconnected spaces facing west, south and east, through which it is possible to follow the sun's trajectory throughout the day.
The internal organization of the apartments and volumes built on the land also follows, among others, the principle of solar exposure, as the predominant factor and guarantee of sustainability of the housing and building itself. Thus, on the northern limit of the land, two nine-story buildings were proposed, arranged linearly, which conclude the relationship of the proposal, if seen generically, with the quadrant and city to the north, with the exception of the narrow passage designed between buildings, which aims to promote crossings. and relationship from north to south. These two buildings contain a large portion of the program requested by the entities organizing the competition, which are the 108 dwellings destined for the T2 typology.
All other typologies (T1, T3 and T4), in smaller numbers (53 apartments), are organized in the remaining 3 buildings (with 5, 9 and 7 floors) and which are located next to the southern limit of the land, with a building that is set back, due to the existence of a plot of land that is excluded from the proposal and out of bidding. But it was a circumstance that took advantage of as a green and framing space, to be used superficially and for accessibility from south to north, and for the central spaces proposed between the north and south fronts and which are outdoor recreational spaces.
